American Standard Central Air Conditioner 3 Ton

When selecting a home air conditioner, it is vital that you consider your own home’s unique characteristics. If your home already benefits from a central cooling system, it is advised that you consult a specialist before installing any upgrades, such as a more modern outdoor cabinet. Additionally, with recent advances in HVAC technology, there may be a hefty sum of cash to be saved in energy bills by selecting a more efficient, recently manufactured system altogether. Further, it is also important that you choose the right size of the unit, as installing a device that is too large will not dehumidify properly, and installing a unit that is too small, will inevitably fail inefficiently establishing a comfortable environment.

Today, our team of HVAC analysts will be assessing one such central AC unit from world-renowned brand American Standard. The unit we have selected for this review is the American Standard  “Scratch & Dent” 3-ton central air conditioner, which we will be analyzed under a wide range of criteria, ranging from efficiency to convenience, help & support, and more. Check out the full review below for more information.

Cooling Performance

A common misconception that is made nowadays is what the cooling tonnage of a unit actually refers to. Many dread the idea of installing a unit that weighs 3 tons in their home or business, however, the tonnage of a central air conditioning unit doesn’t actually refer to the weight of the product. In reality, this harks back to the days of cooling with ice, where cooling capacity would be measured by weight.

In the interest of maintaining consistency throughout all of our air conditioner reviews, this unit’s 3 ton cooling capacity can be roughly translated into a nominal capacity of 36,000 BTUs of cooling power. However, with central heating units, it can be exceptionally difficult to measure the actual output, as such measurements rely on the unit being installed within the given conditions of its control environment.

Efficiency & Certifications

When it comes to efficiency, the American Standard generally maintains quite an impressive record of efficient unit performance. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating is what the industry would commonly refer to as the authority over units of this caliber. Unfortunately, unlike most of the figures, we can apply to the units we review, the SEER rating tends to be slightly more complex when it comes to saving money. First off, this particular unit scores a rating of 15, which is not bad, and certainly an efficient upgrade compared to older units. The complexity that we refer to is that it is sometimes hard to distinguish what a good SEER rating would be for you. Yes, the higher the score, the more you save on bills, in proportion to the usage of course. However, higher scoring units often cost much more, both initially, and to purchase. As well as this, ratings such as this acquire their score through being examined in a controlled testing environment, therefore we advise consulting a specialist on what SEER score is ideal for your own living conditions and climate.

Unfortunately, we were unable to uncover any certification information relating to this product at the time of this review. However, we advise anyone with any questions or queries regarding such certifications to contact American Standard directly through one of the channels we will be listed below in our ‘Help & Support’ section.

Design

Weighing 350lbs, we strongly insist that any buyers of this unit consult a contractor for aid in transport and installation. One major advantage of purchasing a central air conditioning system is that it is silent, at least from an indoor perspective, unlike many other types of units on the market like portable units, for example.

Help & Support

Unfortunately, we were unable to find any warranty related information regarding this unit at the time of this review, however, we do know for certain that the reseller of this product are not applying their own warranty, yet they do concede that the American Standard 3 ton central air conditioner may benefit from the manufacturer’s original warranty plan.

Customer support representatives of American Standard are contactable via telephone or email. Additionally, the company also provides the user with numerous resources on their company website, such as an extensive range of information providing pages so that the buyer is never left in the dark.

Verdict

To sum up our review of the American Standard 3 ton central air conditioner, this unit is ideal for a small commercial setting, while we would not necessarily recommend it for installation in residential circumstances due to the severe lack of convenient features. With a moderate cooling output (compared to other central cooling systems), this unit is certainly one way to cut back on upkeep energy costs if you have a commercial space of the right size in the right location. However, we strongly advise consulting a specialist prior to purchase to ensure that you are making the right decision for your specific property. Additionally, it is vital with units of this size and weight, that you hire a competent and experienced contractor, as botched installations of central AC systems are not uncommon, and can be quite expensive to remedy.
