One of the oldest brands on the market today, Emerson is one of those institutions that seems to have always been, and always will be, one of the frontrunners of the HVAC manufacturing industry. Emerson EARC5MD1 Air Conditioner

Retailing for relatively very little this modest little window-mounted unit lacks many of extra features you might usually expect with a modern day air conditioning unit. However, we would remind our readers that this unit is retailing for a mere $139 approx, a ridiculously low asking price for this kind of equipment.

Cooling Performance

Firing out a modest 5,000 BTUs of cooling power, this window-mount can effectively cater to living spaces measuring up to 100-150 sq. ft. As an added bonus, this little guy will remove up to 1.3 pints of moisture from the air per hour, staving off humidity. We would certainly recommend this unit for small living spaces, or offices.

Efficiency / Certifications

A low voltage start-up saves energy and money for the user. With an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 11, this unit would be considered quite efficient, with the industry average ratio being 9.7. This unit is also UL-Listed, so you can rest assured that this device has no harmful effects on the air you breathe.

Convenience

Regrettably, this unit does not come with remote control, although far be it from us to demand additional features from a unit that retails for so little. The Emerson EARC5MD1 does, however, have a sleep setting. This allows the unit to function on reduced capacity, conserving energy and gradually allowing the temperature to rise throughout the night for optimum sleeping comfort. Combine this with three fan speeds and two cooling settings, and you are really getting bang for your buck with this model. The Emerson EARC5MD1 functions at a noise level of about 55dBA, which is five decibels below your average human conversation. This means the EARC5MD1 is relatively quiet.

Design

Weighing in at 36.68lbs, this unit is easily installed. With a mechanical control panel on the front consisting of two dials, this unit is easily controlled and understood. 8-way directional air louvers also allow the user to apply the unit’s cooling power to specific areas of the room that they deem to be the most in need of cooling.

Verdict

Overall, we really like this unit. Granted, it’s by far not the best window mounted air conditioner we have reviewed, however it’s not meant to be. This is not Emerson’s flagship product, this is for those of us who have a small room to cool and don’t necessarily want all of the bells and whistles. For the price that this product goes for, you can trust us when we say that this unit is worth the asking price, and possibly even more.
