In today’s review, we will be taking a look at the GE AED08LV window-mounted air conditioner. A reasonably powerful unit, this addition to the GE Appliances catalog is suitable for small-medium sized living spaces. When it comes to convenience, this unit is relatively average, missing a few features, but retaining most of what we think defines a great AC unit. One thing that must be remembered when navigating the dense and often confusing landscape of the AC market, is that bigger is not always better. It’s important that you take the time to figure out how much cooling power does your home actually needs? Trust us, you could save yourself a lot of money by picking the right unit, not the most powerful. Read on to see if the GE AED09LV is what you’ve been looking for.

GE AED08LV Air Conditioner Review

Cooling Performance

With 8,200BTUs of cooling power this unit is capable of servicing a living space of up to 250 sq. ft. Additionally, with a maximum airflow of 230 cubic feet per minute, this unit has an added dehumidifying capacity of 1.9 pints per hour. This makes the GE AED08LV the ideal product for those of us wishing to cool small-medium sized living spaces in hot/humid climates.

Efficiency / Certifications

With a superb Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 12.2, the GE AED08LV leaves the industry average of 9.7 in its dust, understandably earning itself an Energy Star Qualification. This implies that the unit has been assessed, and adheres to the EPA regulations set out regarding energy consumption. We must say that it is extremely uncommon to come across a unit that has scored so highly. Furthering its efficiency capabilities, GE have also included 3 Fan Speeds in this unit, allowing the user to adjust the intensity of performance required from the device, saving energy.

Other certifications this device has earned itself include being UL-Listed, and AHAM Certified. The UL-Listing basically declares that this unit has been tested by Underwriters Laboratories, the results of such assessments concluding that this device is safe for public use. The AHAM Certification states that the specifications relating to this device as published by the manufacturer are accurate.

Another admirable quality of this unit is that it utilises Chlorine-Free Refrigerant, which is better for the environment.

Convenience

The GE AED08LV has most of the convenient features we would look for in a device of this class. Remote controllable, you needn’t worry about having to peel yourself off the sofa to shuffle across the room to change the settings on this unit during a sweltering day at home. Rather, you can lean back and control this device from anywhere in the room.

Another immensely useful, arguably industry standard feature on this unit is the Programmable Timer. This allows the user to input a schedule of when in the day they would like their unit to function. This is especially useful for all of the professionals out there. Now you can program your unit to function while you’re commuting home from work, so that by the time you open the door and step inside your home, you will be stepping into a refreshed cooled home.

There are several modes also available on this device. These are Auto Mode, Fan Only Mode, and Energy Saver Mode. Auto allows the unit to detect when temperatures in your living space have reached an uncomfortable level, and to operate to remedy the fall or rise in temperature, adjusting its performance to re-establish a comfortable environment. Fan Only Mode circulates air throughout your home without cooling it. Energy Saver Mode enables the device to function on a decreased capacity, saving energy, and saving you money.

Finally, this device has an Auto Restart function. This means that this unit is capable of rebooting itself after a power outage. This is especially useful for those of us living in environments that are prone to natural disasters, or other sources of power outages.

Unfortunately, this device lacks two of the features that we love to see in most window-mounts, these two features being the Dehumidify Only function, and Sleep Mode.

Design

A built-in Air Filter removes large airborne particulates, allowing the user peace-of-mind. This is an immensely useful feature if the user suffers from light allergies. However, it must be noted that this product is in no way a substitute for an air purifier.

Another useful feature of this unit is its 4-Way Directional Louvers. These allow for evenly distributed airflow from your device to every corner of the room.

Weighing 61lbs, this unit is not among the heaviest window-mounts we have reviewed, however we would not recommend attempting to lift / install this unit  without help.

Functioning at a noise level of 50dB, this unit is also exceptionally quiet for its class. For reference, the average human conversation registers at about 60dB.

Help & Support

Backed by 1-year appliance and compressor warranties, GE customer service representatives are contactable via email, telephone, and an immensely useful live chat on the company’s website.

Also on GE’s website are downloadable user manuals, which are useful in the case of your physical copy getting lost or destroyed.

Verdict

All factors taken into consideration we believe this to be a fine window-mounted air conditioner. Forgiving the exclusion of a few features that we would have liked to have seen built-into this device, when you take the GE AED08LV for what it is, a simple yet effective air conditioning unit, it’s hard to find issues with it. Does it have all the bells and whistles attached that we would have liked to have seen. No. However, it gets the job done. At the end of the day, what we all want is a unit that just works. The GE AED08LV is just that.
