Welcome to our Honeywell HFD-120-Q air purifier review.

Our team put the Honeywell HFD-120-Q to the test in our usual fashion, critiquing the product under the headings of performance, energy efficiency, convenience, design, and customer support. Without further ado, let’s begin.

Honeywell HFD-120-Q Air Purifier –

As we alluded to above, Honeywell is one of the most versatile brands we have come across in our reviewing of HVAC technologies. As such, it came as no surprise to our team that this unit looks as elegant and refined as would be expected of Honeywell. Retailing at an affordable price of approximately $139.67, this particular unit is perfect if you are working on a budget. However, there are concessions to be made, as the Honeywell HFD-120-Q is not as powerful as some of the others we have reviewed on this site.

Cleaning Capabilities

Effective in typical family living spaces of up to 170 square feet, this unit from Honeywell is capable of providing five air exchanges per hour. This essentially implies that all of the air in the room will have passed through the device five times in the space of sixty minutes. This is a healthy figure, however, be warned that the frequency of air exchanges is subject to change based on the size of your living space. With a relatively low CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rating), we would recommend the installation of this unit in smaller rooms of your home, such as bedrooms.

The CADR figure specifics for a typical family living space are as follows:

  • Smoke: 110
  • Dust: 132
  • Pollen:  132

We conducted additional research into this particular unit and found that certain retailers have promoted this product as a true HEPA system, although we can clarify for our readers that this unit’s filter is, in fact, not a true HEPA filter. However, the Honeywell HFD-120-Q is effective at eliminating airborne pollutants such as dust, animal dander, and cigarette smoke. Although this unit is not capable of fully curing allergies, if it’s simply clean and refreshed air you’re looking for, we would certainly recommend the Honeywell HFD-120-Q.

Within this device lies a 3-stage filtration system. This consists of a washable pre-filter, a permanent washable IFD filter, and an electronic Ionizer. The last of these filters carries with it a slight compromise, as ionizers have been shown to emit small amounts of Ozone. If allowed to reach too high a level, Ozone can cause various lung diseases. However, the amount of Ozone emitted from such devices is usually nothing to worry about. Regardless, we would recommend that you steer clear of Ionizing units should you suffer from any respiratory conditions. The purpose of such a filter is to charge the air passing through the unit, which makes it easier for the device to catch the air on the second pass.

Note: Never place a wet IFD filter back into your unit following cleaning. Cleaning instructions: Carefully remove IFD filter, clean by vacuum cleaner, if still dirty following tapping, etc., wash in lukewarm water with a small amount of dish soap. Do so by allowing to soak for 2-3 minutes, no more. Following this, remove the filter, and rinse with tap water. Place on a dry, clean towel and allow it to dry overnight. When fully dry, place back into the purifier.

Efficiency & Certifications

As far as efficiency is concerned, the Honeywell-HFD-120-Q benefits from arguably the most important efficiency-related certification, in that it is Energy Star certified. This implies that the Honeywell-HFD-120-Q adheres to regulations regarding energy consumption set out by the Environmental Protection Agency. When selecting an air purifier, it is of paramount importance that you take efficiency into account. Should you find yourself working with an inefficient air purifier unit, you will end up having to pay higher bills for a product that delivers fewer results. Additionally, this unit has been AHAM certified, which declares that this unit has been assessed and will perform to the specifications set out by the manufacturer.

Consuming only 43 Watts on its highest setting, the Honeywell-HFD-120-Q will not cost a substantial amount of money to run. The efficient performance of this unit is certainly impressive considering its performance output, and so we would recommend this device for buyers in the market for a casual, inexpensive unit.

Finally, the Honeywell-HFD-120-Q also benefits from an ARB certification, which states that this unit does not damage air quality, according to the California Air Resources Board.

Convenience

With a unit weight of only 14lbs, this product is one of the lightest air purifiers we have come across. Additionally, with a tall sleek exterior casing, the Honeywell-HFD-120-Q will sit quite comfortably into a contemporary living space. A common issue we have come across with portable HVAC units is exactly where to place such a unit. With this unit from Honeywell, this is not so much of an issue. Due to its small size, this unit can be placed virtually anywhere in your living space, without interfering with the décor and flow of the room.

Design

While an exact decibel rating was unavailable at the time of this review, the Honeywell-HFD-120-Q operates at an extremely low noise level, making it suitable for installation anywhere in your home, including bedrooms, offices, etc. With three fan speeds, this unit can effectively take the place of the traditional air fan as well, with an ON/OFF oscillation feature, which will deliver clean and refreshed air throughout your living space evenly. As is the case with many Honeywell units, this unit lacks an activated carbon filter, which means that this unit will not be entirely effective at removing odours from your home. Another filter this product is unfortunately lacking is a true HEPA filter, however Honeywell does incorporate its own patented filter technology.

Help & Support

Honeywell customer service representatives are contactable via social media, email, telephone, and Live chat. Alternatively, information may be acquired through the various online resources provided by Honeywell, which include troubleshooters, FAQs, and downloadable user manuals, all accessible via the company website.

This product in particular is backed by an impressive 5-year limited warranty, which is one of the most generous coverage plans we have come across in the industry.

Summary

With all factors taken into consideration, we believe that there is no denying the Honeywell-HFD-120-Q’s high value for money. For a price-tag as low as this product’s, the buyer is truly spoiled with this unit. Compared to some of the other units we have reviewed, we would consider this Honeywell unit to be quite affordable. Granted, performance-wise some concessions must be made, however, if you’re looking for a casual, light, yet aesthetically attractive air purifier unit, we may have just the one for you with the Honeywell-HFD-120-Q.
