Cooling Performance

Providing the user with 8,000 BTUs of cooling power, the Koldfront WTC8001W In-Wall air conditioner is capable of servicing an estimated area of up to 350 square feet. As an added bonus, this model is also able to remove 1.8 pints of moisture from the air each hour, making it a reasonably efficient dehumidifier. This unit may be on the smaller side of In-Wall air conditioners, however, we found it to perform quite well within its footage range.

Efficiency / Certifications

Coming Energy Star Qualified, this unit boasts an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 9.6, which is surprisingly below the market average of 9.7. To aid efficient use of this product, Koldfront included 3 Fan Speeds, allowing the user to adjust the intensity of operation, as required.

Another certification that the Koldfront WTC8001W benefits from is being UL-Listed, which testifies that this unit is safe for public use.

Convenience

Controllable via wireless remote control, this unit’s settings may be tweaked from anywhere in the room, which is useful on those sweltering days where movement is the last thing on your mind. The Koldfront WTC8001W also has a built-in programmable timer, which allows the operator to dictate when the device will operate, regardless of whether or not they are at home. This is useful for the professionals out there who are tired of returning to a hot and humid home after a long day at work. With the timer, you can program your unit to switch on before you arrive home, so that you are greeted by a refreshed and comfortable environment.

This unit also comes with several built-in Modes. Sleep Mode allows the unit to gradually allow temperatures to increase throughout the night, maintaining a comfortable environment. This is to save energy, and ensure that you don’t wake up to a cold home. Auto Mode enables the unit to sense when the temperatures of a living space reach an uncomfortable level, and to jump into operation to re-establish a comfortable living environment.

Energy Saver Mode will see the unit function at a decreased capacity, in order to cut down your energy bills. Finally, Fan Mode will circulate air in the room, without cooling it.

Unfortunately, there is no Dehumidify Only Mode, which is unfortunate, as it is a feature we have enjoyed in the past for its sheer usefulness.

Design

With a built-in Air Filter, you needn’t worry about inhaling large airborne particulates such as hair or dust. Another design feature that is always appreciated is the inclusion of 4-Way Directional Louvers, which allow for even airflow across a whole living space rather than in one direction alone.

Weighing 65lbs, this is one of lightest In-Wall air conditioners we have ever reviewed. However, lifting and installing AC units can be tricky, and so we always recommend you seek help with installation, simply as a precautionary measure.

The Koldfront WTC8001W is undoubtedly a fine in-wall air conditioning unit. With a few tiny issues, such as there being no Dehumidify Only Mode, or Auto Restart capability, with all factors taken into consideration, it is safe to say that the Koldfront WTC8001W comes out on top. If it’s a decent middle-range in-wall unit you’re in the market for, this may be just the unit for you.
