LG LP1215GXR Air Conditioner Review

Retailing for approximately $529.99, the LG LP1215GXR is by no means a “cheap” portable air conditioner. While this price-tag may be a bit of a stretch for those of us working with a strict budget, allow us to explain why we believe the LG LP1215GXR is worth every cent of the asking price. Providing more raw cooling power than most units on the market, this unit is effective at getting the job done. Additionally, with a range of convenient features and a refined, sleek exterior appearance, it’s rare that operating a portable air conditioner unit feels this smooth. Check out our full review below for more information.

Cooling Performance

With 12,000 BTUs of cooling power, the LG LP1215GXR is a formidable portable air conditioning unit, suitable for servicing estimated areas of up to 400 square feet, with a maximum airflow of 255 CFM. Additionally, this unit is capable of removing up to 1.2 pints of moisture from the air per hour, allowing for it to double as an effective dehumidifier. We would certainly recommend the LG LP1215GXR for installation in medium-large typical family living spaces.

Efficiency / Certifications

The Energy Star certification declares that a unit adheres to a set of strict regulations regarding energy consumption as set out by the Environmental Protection Agency. Unfortunately, the LG LP1215GXR not only lacks this certification, but we were also unable to obtain an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) for this unit, which takes into account the amount of energy consumed by the device and to what extent it performs. This is usually our primary measure for assessing how efficiently a unit operates. However, we can assure our readers that this unit consumes approximately 1,270W of power, meaning it will perform to an average extent with regard to efficiency. Efficient performance is further enabled with the inclusion of 3 differing fan speeds on the device. This allows the user to operate their device on the lowest necessary function, saving energy and thus saving money on upkeep bills.

Regrettably, there was no information regarding any other certifications awarded to this unit at the time of this review. However, this is not extremely worrying, as units manufactured by non-American brands tends to lack some of the certifications that are commonplace in the American market. We always advise our readers to seek out certifications and contact the manufacturer in advance if they have any questions regarding how their unit will perform. That being said, taking a risk on an LG product is a relatively safe bet, as the company has proven itself to be highly reliable over the years.

An Energy Saver mode allows the LG LP1215GXR to function at a decreased capacity, while still maintaining a comfortable living environment. This is exceptionally useful for saving you money on your upkeep costs.

Convenience

While the LG LP1215GXR provides a hefty amount of cooling power, it does not necessarily have to cool your home. With the dehumidifier function, this unit is capable of removing moisture from the air without applying any of its cooling abilities. This is incredibly useful if your home is suffering from excessive humidity, but not heat. As stated above, on this function, the LG LP1215GXR is capable of removing up to 1.2 pints of moisture from the air each hour, making it an excellent choice for combatting damp/humidity.

With a wireless remote control included with this unit, the user needn’t worry about having to pull themselves through the thick summer air to change the settings on their device. An often overlooked feature, the remote control should not be taken for granted, as there are several units on the market lacking this feature, and we can promise you that this feature is sorely missed in its absence.

Auto Restart capabilities allow the LG LP1215GXR to reboot automatically following an unprecedented power outage. This feature is essential if you live in an area that is frequently plagued with blackouts, due to natural disasters, or infrastructural problems. Without this function, should a power-outage strike while you are away, your unit would not resume until you return home, whereas, with Auto Restart, you needn’t worry about returning to an overheated or damp home.

Thermostat control allows the user to set the temperature that’s best for them, which is always a feature that we greatly appreciate.

Design

We must say, from a design standpoint, the LG LP1215GXR is an impressive appliance. Clearly making the extra effort, LG has gone to lengths to make this product as user friendly as possible. However, with a weight of 61.7lbs (Shipping weight: 72.7lbs), this unit is quite heavy, therefore we would not recommend attempting to transport or install this unit without assistance. That being said, with the unit standing on easy-roll caster wheels, and with the addition of handles on either side of the device, moving the LG LP1215GXR about the house is relatively easy.

Additionally, a water-full indicator will notify the user when the water reservoir in the device is too full to continue functioning. However, as this device is self-evaporating, you should only be rarely required to empty the reservoir, except for in extreme humidity conditions.

With a noise level of 56 dBA, this unit is not exceptionally loud, nor is it very quiet. Instead, it functions at a relatively average volume. For reference, the average human conversation registers at approximately 60 dB. The LG LP1215GXR’s volume is certainly manageable, however, we would not recommend it for installation in bedrooms, offices, or nurseries etc.

Auto-swing oscillating louvers deliver air to the entire room, instead of focusing cooled air in one direction, this design allows for a more even spread of airflow.

Aesthetically speaking, this unit upholds the LG tradition of being sleek, and professional. A matte-black finish wrapped around a beveled, smooth design, with a modern LED user interface makes the LG LP1215GXR look the part of a modern, efficient air conditioning unit.

Verdict

In summary, our team unanimously concluded that this device is yet another excellent addition to the LG catalogue. Sleek in design, with elevated performance figures, our sole gripe with this unit was it lacking some features that we enjoy, such as Sleep Mode. However, we would certainly recommend this product for daytime use, in medium-large sized living spaces.
