Whirlpool Air Conditioner Review

Before we begin our Whirlpool Air Conditioner Review, a word of caution. In the realm of home air conditioning appliances, it’s an easy mistake to believe that the more powerful a unit is, the better it will perform for you and your loved ones. This is simply not the case. In fact, we recommend that you opt for less powerful units if your living space is the right size. Pay extra attention to the estimated range of effect of each unit, and apply this knowledge to the room in which you intend to install your appliance. We strongly advise obtaining an approximate measurement of the room before you begin browsing the market. Additionally, it should be taken into account that these measurements assume a ceiling height of 8 feet. Know that ceilings higher or lower than this will have an effect on the efficiency of your unit (+/- 1,000 BTUs per foot).

Whirlpool Energy Star 15,000 BTU

Providing a cooling capacity of up to 15,000 BTUs, the Whirlpool Energy Star 15,000 BTU is suitable for installation in living spaces of up to 7000 square feet. Additionally, while cooling the room, this unit is also capable of removing up to 3.52 pints of moisture from the air per hour, which makes this unit both an effective air conditioner and dehumidifier, all rolled into one product.

Efficiency & Certifications

The Energy Efficiency Ratio of a unit provides an accurate measurement of how efficient a unit will operate, which translates into how much a unit will cost you on your energy bills. With the current industry average EER standing at approximately 9.7, any unit that scores over 10 is generally considered to be highly efficient. Therefore, for this unit to score an 11.9, indicates that this unit will perform to an impressively high level. Further, the Energy Star certification is awarded to units that follow strict guidelines set out by the EPA, regarding energy consumption. Lastly, the UL-Listing that this unit benefits from declares that this product has pased safety assessments carried out by the experts at Underwriters Laboratories.

Verdict

With its formidable 15,000 BTUs of cooling power, and extensive range of convenient features of both operation and design, the Whirlpool Energy Star 15,000 BTU window-mounted air conditioner is a product that you should certainly consider if you require an efficient unit that will cater to large living spaces. It is rare that one comes across a unit that is convenient, efficient, and performs well, and so when you find one such unit, we strongly advise that you keep it in mind.

Whirlpool WHAP142AW

While 1,000 BTUs less powerful than the first unit on our Whirlpool Air Conditioner Review, the Whirlpool WHAP142AW benefits from being a portable unit. This means easier installation, but more importantly, you can move this unit around your home with ease. With 14,000 BTUs of cooling power, this device is surely a force to be reckoned with. Capable of servicing rooms of up to 550 square feet, the WHAP142AW carries with it the added benefit of removing up to 91.3 pints of moisture from the air every 24hrs, with a maximum airflow of 200 CFM.

Efficiency & Certifications

Unfortunately, unlike the Whirlpool Energy Star 15,000 BTU, the WHAP142AW is not a very efficient unit. Falling slightly below average, this product scores a moderate EER of 8.9. Further, the Whirlpool WHAP142AW does not enjoy an Energy Star certification. On a more positive note, this unit has been UL-Listed, so the user can rest assured that this unit is entirely safe to use.

Convenience & Design

In typical Whirlpool fashion, the Whirlpool WHAP142AW comes loaded to the brim with convenient features and modes. Whirlpool have fortunately taken the dehumidifier function of this device into account, including both a full water tank indicator, and auto shutoff capabilities for when leakage is a possibility due to there being no more space left in the reservoir. Additionally, with the combination of the remote control, 24-hour timer, and differing fan speeds, the user is empowered to draw the performance they require from their unit.

Notable Features: Wireless Remote Control / Programmable Operational 24-Hour Timer / Reusable Washable Air Filter / Full Water Tank Indicator with Auto Shut-off / 3 Cooling and Fan Speeds / 4 Easy-Roll Caster Wheels for Portability / Drainage Hose Connection (For Continuous Drainage)

Operational Modes / Functions: Power Failure Auto Restart / Fan-Only Mode / Dehumidify Only

Noise Level: 54dB

Verdict

Overall we believe this unit to be a fine choice of portable air conditioner. While the user must admittedly sacrifice some of the efficiency enjoyed by other units on the market, we believe that this is a fair trade off when the factor of portability is taken into account. At the end of the day, it really depends on the users own personal preferences and living space whether the advantages of portability are worth the trade-off.

Whirlpool WHAP121AW

While the Whirlpool WHAP121AW may be the weakest unit on our Whirlpool Air Conditioner Review list, it is by no means to be considered “weak” in comparison to the rest of the air conditioner market as a whole. In fact, 12,000 BTUs of cooling power in any other context would be considered to be a massive amount of power for a portable unit. Being capable of providing such a large number of BTUs when cooling makes this unit ideally suited for installation in living spaces of up to 450 square feet. Lastly, with a maximum airflow of 200 CFM (Similar to the WHAP142AW), this unit is capable of removing up to 81.6 pints of moisture from the air every day.
